Biography

Born in 1580 (according to other sources in 1585) to the family of rezhesh from the village of Bolotesti (now the county of Vrancea, Romania ).

Fought for national and religious rights of Transylvanian Romanians. The champion of education and friendship with Russia . One of the founders of the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy ( 1640 ) in Iasi .

In 1637 - 1643, Vasily Lupu opened the first Moldovan printing house in Iasi with the participation of Metropolitan Varlaam and with the help of Moscow , Kiev and Lvov , from which equipment for printing and paper were brought. The printing house was printed 8 books, among them "Kazaniya Varlaam" ( 1643 ) and the first Moldavian collection of laws - "The Code of V. Lupu" ( 1646 ). Political turmoil led to the closure of the printing house in 1653 .

The beginning of the written tradition in Romanian is associated with his name [1] .

Leaving the pulpit, Barlaam retired to . By his order several Slavic manuscripts with elegant ornaments were rewritten.

He died in 1657 in the [2] . There he was buried.

Canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church. On March 7, 2018, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, was included in the month of the Russian Orthodox Church on September 12. [3] .

Memory

  • The streets in Chisinau [4] and Balti are named after Barlaam.
  • In 1999, a Moldova postage stamp dedicated to Barlaam was issued.
