Biography
Received teacher education. In 1965-1990 worked in a number of schools and colleges in Malaysia.
It takes active measures to revive the Kristang. He gives lectures on Kristang at the invitation of several universities in the world and public organizations (Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, 1997; Eurasian Association of Singapore, 2011; University of Malaya , 2014) [1] . Publishes dictionaries and phrasebooks, translates poems and songs into this language, seeks to study Kristang in primary schools in places of compact residence of the Creole population, especially in Malacca [2] .
Organizer of the conference "On the Preservation and Development of the Malacca-Portuguese Creole Language and Heritage in Malaysia" (January 1996). He initiated the creation of a department for the life of the Euro-Asian community in the People’s Museum of Malacca in 2010, and held a Christian language seminar in December 2011 (jointly with the Corporation of Malacca Museums) and an international conference on Creole languages in June 2012 in Malacca (together with the Federal University of Rio de -Janeiro).
In connection with the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Malacca by the Portuguese (1511), prepared and released in 2012 a set of three books “Commemorative Dictionary of the Serani Language”, “Speak in Serani” and “Songs of Serani”). Previously, the language was called serani, and Joan Marbek believes that you need to return to the previous name. In Kuala Lumpur in 2014, she opened Kristang courses.
Having a musical education, writes musicals. In 1994, she was invited to write and stage the musical "St. Francis Xavier - the main saint of India" in connection with the 100th anniversary of the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Malacca [3] . In 2009, she wrote and submitted to the competition of the Lusofon Festival in Macau a monodrama in the Kristang language 'Seng Marianne' (Without Marianne). In December 2010, in Kuala Lumpur, with the sponsorship of the Brazilian Embassy, her musical in the kristang language Kazamintu na Praiya (Beach Wedding) was staged [4] .
Member of the Eurasian Association of Selangor and the Federal Territory, the Eurasian Portuguese Association of Malacca, the Malacca theater group.
