Born in the family of a locksmith. In 1892, after passing the exams, he received the so-called “diploma of preliminary education”, which, according to the law of 1881, allowed primary education. After that, he began working as a private tutor; this work left him time for self-education and poetry. In 1896-1911 he worked as an assistant surveyor-surveyor in Lemvig , from 1904 to 1923 he was editor of the publication Lemvig Dagblad . In 1904 he married Tours Paludan.

Larsen's first collection of poems, Wild Roses, was published in 1895. In 1923, the collection "Earth" was published, which brought him fame. In 1923-1925 he was the chief editor of Atlantis magazine. In 1925 he received the Otto Benzons Award, which allowed him to travel to Italy, but at that time his health was already severely undermined by diabetes. Larsen died a few years later.

During his lifetime he was popular and quite widely known, but he was not considered a truly outstanding poet. It is believed, however, that his work influenced many Danish poets of the 20th century. In addition to poetry, he also studied amateur astronomy, translated Old Icelandic sagas (including Elder Edda ) and Persian poetry, mainly Omar Khayyam .
