Myeloperoxidase ( English Myeloperoxidase , EC 1.11.1.7 ) is an enzyme of neutrophil lysosomes , refers to heme- containing proteins . Myeloperoxidase forms hypochlorite - an anion that, being a strong oxidizing agent, has a non-specific bactericidal effect. However, in many inflammatory diseases (fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis), neutrophilic myeloperoxidase can cause tissue damage. Myeloperoxidase rises in the blood during an inflammatory process in the arteries, which often causes the destruction of fatty atherosclerotic deposits in the vessel wall and subsequent thrombosis . Therefore, myeloperoxidase is one of the most accurate diagnostic parameters for the risk of heart attack or stroke .

Reaction
In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, myeloperoxidase oxidizes the chlorine anion to hypochlorite, which has a strong antibacterial effect due to oxidative stress .
H 2 O 2 + Cl - → H 2 O + OCl -
