Biography
Karl Hirschman was born in the city of Medan (Dutch East Indies) on February 16, 1877. As secretary of the Football Union of the Netherlands (KNVB), on May 8, 1902, he contacted the secretary of the Football Association of England, Frederick Wall with a proposal to organize a single European football organization. He was an active participant in the first constituent FIFA Congress on May 21-23, 1904, where he was elected the first vice-president of FIFA (together with V. E. Schneider) [2] . At the Third FIFA Congress (June 3-4, 1906) he was elected Secretary General of this organization (historically the second after L. Mühlinghaus ). Subsequently, until 1931, he remained in this position unchanged. After the death of FIFA President D. Woolfall, he acted as the President of FIFA (1918-1921) and the Honorary Treasurer of this organization, and also proposed to the post of President J. Rome , who headed FIFA on March 1, 1921.
K. Hirschman was one of the initiators of the creation of the NOC of the Netherlands , and was elected its first secretary and treasurer on September 11, 1912. In 1913, the Netherlands Football Union initiated the FIFA-sponsored competition of the 1916 Olympic Football Tournament (the tournament did not take place due to the outbreak of the First World War ).
In 1931, the Hirschman bank, where the money of FIFA and the NOC of the Netherlands was stored, went bankrupt, and he resigned [3] .
