Character Creation
John Carter acts as the so-called " trap " [1] - a person who has fallen into the past, a planet or another world. Before the creation of John Carter, such works as “The Yankees from Connecticut at the Court of King Arthur ” by Mark Twain, “The Vacation of Lieutenant Gullivar Jones” by Edwin Lester Arnold were known. The latter came out not long before John Carter and, as it is believed, Burroughs borrowed a great deal from him, because the similarity of the heroes who got to Mars and who are at war with the local population, is striking [2] . Burroughs shows Carter "a real gentleman", as he himself was, many researchers of his work tend to believe that Carter’s image is partially written off from himself [2] .
Abilities
It is no secret that it was Barrow’s books that became the basis for many science fiction and adventure films, including the same Star Wars. And, perhaps, some viewers who are not familiar with the original source will take hostility in the plot of "John Carter" with the films already known to them.
But there are ordinary red people on the Red Planet. They, too, are about to start a civil war, and under the pretext of preventing it, the ruler of the bad (Dominic West) is trying to slyly marry the princess of the good (Lynn Collins), who, like Tolstoyan Aelita, falls in love with a white muscular newcomer.
John Carter was a soldier in the Confederation Army, a fairly skilled archer and swordsman before entering Mars. Once on Mars, Carter, thanks to a different gravity of the planet (in comparison with Earth), acquires a number of abilities that made him much stronger than any inhabitant of Barsum : he was able to jump long distances and had enormous power [5] [6] .

Impact
The novels about John Carter influenced the development of the science fiction genre, laying the foundations of space operas [7] . It is believed that Alexey Tolstoy , creating Aelita , was inspired by the Burroughs Martian cycle . His engineer, Elk, has a number of traits related to John Carter [4] [8] [9] . Also, Carter is one of Superman's prototypes [10] , especially in explaining the abilities of early comic book releases about him. In addition, the Barsumsky cycle influenced Star Wars [3] . Carter served as the prototype for Robert Howard’s character Isau Cairn, the hero of Howard ’s only science fiction novel Almurik .
In art
“ Once I got the book“ John Carter is a Martian ”by Edgar Rice Burroughs with illustrations by Frank Frazetta . His drawing style simply conquered me; however, I myself wanted to work in a different way to transfer pictures to my canvas that were in my mind. ”
John Carter is a character to whom paintings by many science fiction writers such as Gerald Brom [11] , Frank Frazetta , Michael Whelan [12] and many others are devoted.
