Black Entertainment Television is an American cable television channel that is owned by BET Networks, a division of Viacom . As the most famous television network targeted at African American audiences, BET is available for viewing by 90 million American households [1] .

The channel was launched by John Malone on January 25, 1980 and broadcast within a two-hour block until 1983 [2] . In 1983, the channel became a full-fledged network, and its content included replays of afro-sitcoms and music videos [2] . In 1988, BET launched its own news, and in 1991, the network became the first company with African Americans in management positions, which received an index on the New York Stock Exchange [2] . In 2001, the network became part of Viacom's media conglomerate. Starting from the 2000s, the channel began to develop its own original programs with a script, including television films, sitcoms (such as The Game ), and in 2013, the first drama series, Be Mary Jane [3] .
