Biography

Jozef Motyka was born on March 23, 1900 in the village of Konzlova near the town of Grybow . He studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow , where he was influenced by Professor Vladislav Schafer . While still a student, he participated in expeditions to study the flora of the Tatras . In 1924 he published two publications on the epixyl lichens of the Tatras, the most detailed monographs of the communities of these organisms at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1925, he received his Ph.D. The next ten years, Motyka was engaged in the preparation of a monograph of a major clan of Usney . In 1926, he visited Geneva, Paris and London, in 1929 - Norway, Sweden and Finland. The monograph was published in 1936-1938 in Latin.

At the beginning of World War II, Motyka was in Lviv , until 1944 he worked in a botanical garden. After the war, he taught for some time at the school in Grybowu, in 1945, he became director of the department of plant geography and systematics and an adjunct professor of botany at the newly formed University. Marie Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin . Engaged in the study of ecology and geobotany.

After 1956 he continued to study lichenology. In 1960, he became a full professor at the University of Lublin.

He died on July 6, 1984 .
