Biography

Representative of the genus Gizov , the younger line of the Lorraine House . The eldest son of Charles I of Lorraine ( 1556 - 1605 ), 1st Duke of d'Elboeuf ( 1582 - 1605 ), and Margarita de Chabot ( 1565 - 1652 ). The younger brother is the famous French military leader Heinrich Lorraine , Count d'Arcourt and Armagnac, Viscount de Marsan.

In August 1605, after the death of his father, nine-year-old Charles inherited the title of Duke d'Elboeuf and Peer of France .

Since 1607, he was at the French royal court, becoming a playmate of the future king of France, Louis XIII . After the king came of age, Charles Lorraine received the position of chief chamberlain of France.

He was a faithful servant of the king, helped him in conflicts with Maria Medici , Cardinal Richelieu and the Huguenots . The Duke de Longville , Governor of Normandy , loyal to Queen Maria de Medici, led an uprising against the king and camped near Oval. The king and cardinal crushed the rebellion, and Charles de Guise was appointed new governor of Normandy.

Charles de Guise participated in the siege of La Rochelle , but was wounded at Saint-Jean-d'Angeli . Then he received the post of governor of Picardy .

He died in Paris in 1657 .

Marriage and children

June 20, 1619 married Catherine Henrietta de Bourbon (1596-1663), Mademoiselle de Vendome, the illegitimate daughter of King of France Henry IV of Bourbon and his favorite Gabriel d'Estre . The couple had six children:

  • Charles III de Guise-Lorrain (1620 - May 4, 1692), 3rd Duke of El'Boeuf (1657–1692)
  • Henry (1622 - April 3, 1648), Abbot Ombliere
  • Francois Louis (1623 - June 27, 1694), Earl d'Arcourt
  • Francois Maria (April 4, 1624 - January 19, 1694), Prince de Lillebonne
  • Catherine (1626-1645), nun in Port Royal
  • Maria Margarita (1629 - August 7, 1679), Mademoiselle d'Elboeuf

From an extramarital affair with Jeanne-Francoise, Schotte had a daughter:

  • Charlotte Francoise Adrian (born 1638 ).
