Kumaoni ( कुमाँऊनी भाषा ) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Kumaon region of the Indian state of Uttarakhand , as well as in the western regions of Nepal .

It belongs to the central group of Pahari languages. The number of carriers, according to 1998, is 2 360 000 people [2] . There are several main dialects: central, northeastern, southeastern and western. The central dialect is considered the most common. The most closely related languages are Garhwali and Nepali . In India, most native speakers also speak Hindi . The number of carriers is rapidly declining.
The writing used is devanagari .
