Came from the noble family of the Hanykovs . In 1831, he transferred from the Noble guesthouse at the Imperial St. Petersburg University to Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum , where together with A. A. Kharitonov he published the manuscript journal “The Lyceum's Son”. He graduated from the Lyceum in 1835 .

Immediately established itself as a talented geographer and cartographer; his description of the Orenburg region was highly appreciated by contemporaries. In the article “Geographical Review of the Orenburg Territory”, Khanykov described the natural conditions, population and cities of a vast territory, which included (within modern borders) the Urals, Kazakhstan, Bashkiria, Tatarstan and the Lower Volga. Of great interest to economic geography was his work, "Review of the ore production of private Orenburg plants in 1838."

He was the ruler of the office of the Riga governor E. A. Golovin . In 1846, he was appointed chairman of the Audit Commission of the Ministry of the Interior, which was entrusted with the task of studying the urban structure and economy of Riga and drawing up a project for transforming this city.

On behalf of the Russian Geographical Society, he compiled “A Map of the Aral Sea and the Khiva Khanate with its environs” and “A Map of Lake Issyk-Kul with its environs”, printed in 1851 in the Notes of the Geographical Society . In addition, he, together with V. I. Dahl, collected "Information about the ways to Khiva." “The cartographic works of Khanykov attracted the attention of the scientific world, its map was published in French by the Paris Geographic Society, and, according to A. Humboldt, the king of Prussia granted Khanykov the Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree” [1] . Hanykov took part in the translation of “Asia” by K. Ritter and was a member of the editorial committee for monitoring the publication of the Bulletin of the Russian Geographical Society. In 1851, he was elected secretary of the Russian Geographical Society.

The map of northern Persia was not completed by Y. V. Khanykov, and the Geographical Society handed over its compilation to his brother, N. V. Khanykov , who included information collected in the Khorosan expedition. Also, on behalf of the Geographical Society, after the death of Y. V. Khanykov, N. A. Ivashentsov, a map of the Caspian Sea was compiled.

Ya. V. Khanykov is also the author of the Essay on the History of the Medical Police in Russia (St. Petersburg, 1851).

Since 1846, he was married to Ekaterina Evgenievna Golovina (1821–1852), the daughter of General E. A. Golovin and the granddaughter of Senator P. I. Fonvizin . According to contemporaries, Golovin “by nature didn’t quite suit Khanykov, but he was in love with her head over heels” [2] .
