Life Story

Zeno was a native of northern Africa (born in what is now northern Morocco or Algeria). At an early age, he took monasticism and, wandering around the monasteries, came to the city of Verona, where the inhabitants were elected bishop. He was famous for fighting the Arian heresy during the rule of the emperors Constantius and Valens .

Mentioned by Ambrose of Milan and Gregory the Great . The latter describes a miracle in Verona in the year 558 , when during a flood the water stopped at the threshold of the church in which the relics of Zeno rested. According to an anonymous Latin elegy known as written (written between 781 and 810), Zeno was the eighth bishop of Verona.

Literary heritage

As a Latin writer, Zeno was unknown until the opening of the handwriting code in 1508 with 105 instructions, or speeches (sermones), on behalf of Bishop Zeno of the monastic community (fratres). This code was part of the bishopric library, exported from Verona to Venice . According to the peculiarity of the style, similar to Cyprian and Tertullian , according to the multiple recollections of the Moorish martyr of Arcadia, it was recognized that Zeno was from Africa . For all the time of his bishopric ( 362 - 380 years ), he was a zealous fighter against paganism and Arianism .

Zeno is attributed to 92 (according to other sources 93) speeches, which fall into 2 books: in the first 62, in the second 30. Only 16 are more or less long speeches, the rest are short or even excerpts. The speeches of Zeno contain valuable information on the history of dogmas and on Christian archeology. They are written in a lively, elegant language and indicate the author's scholarship. The literary style of Zeno’s sermons, rich in neologisms and wordplay, is considered to be an indirect confirmation of his African origin [1] .

Reception

The chapel of St. Zeno in Santa Prassede (Rome) is an outstanding monument of fine art of the 9th century.
