History

Location of Van Horn in Culberson County, and Culberson County in Texas

Van Horn was founded in 1881 as a stopping point on the . It was named for James Judson Van Horn (1834-1898), who commanded a garrison in 1859-1861, whose location ( Van Horn Wells ) was several kilometers south of the future city [2] [3] [4] .

In 1886, the first store, as well as a post office, opened in Van Horn. In 1887, the first school opened, a separate building for which was built in 1893. By 1890, about 450 people lived in the Van Horn area, although in the settlement itself there were only a few dozen residents - about thirty in 1892 and about seventy in 1896 [2] .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Van Horn grew, a number of new buildings were built. Culberson County was founded in 1911 and Van Horn became its district center. In 1912, construction began on the administrative building of the district court, which was completed in 1914. By this time, the population of Van Horn was already about 500 people, in the city there were two mixed goods stores, a hotel, a bank, a pharmacy, a telephone company and a meat market [2] .

By 1927, about 800 people were already living in Van Horn, and in the 1930s the population reached 1,600. This was facilitated by the construction of the US 80 highway (which is currently part of the Interstate 10 ) and the development of road communication, as well as the favorable location of Van Horn as a tourist center - between the mountains of and the Carlsbad caves in the north and the mountains of and the Rio Grande River in the south (where the Big Bend National Park was founded in 1944) [2] .

Van Horn received city rights on September 1, 1945, after which he was elected the first mayor of the city [2] .
