Olevsky district ( Ukrainian: Olevsky district ) is an administrative unit in the north-west of the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine . The administrative center is the city of Olevsk .

Geography

Territory - 2248 km². Olevsky district is located in the northwestern part of the region and belongs to Ukrainian Polesie . It borders in the south with the Emilchinsky and Novograd-Volynsky districts of the region, and in the west with the Rokytnovsky district of the Rivne region . The area lies within the Polesie lowland . The rivers of the Dnieper basin flow through its territory: Clean up with tributaries of the Zolnya , Perga and others. Forests occupy 73% of the area. In the district there is a large part of the Polessky Reserve , a state reserve - Carpenter and six natural monuments of local importance. The region has huge reserves of peat , which is used for the production of peat briquettes. There are 83 such deposits, there are also concrete sands, facing stone, granite , varieties of quartz , clay .

History

The center of the district is the city of Olevsk . Historical references indicate that Olevsk was founded in the second half of the 10th century by Ovruch prince Oleg Svyatoslavich. At that time, Olevsk was called the Oleg settlement and was an important point of the Drevlyansk land. In the XVI century , the Olevsky volost was formed. The area within its current borders was formed in 1923 .

Demographics

The population of the district is more than 47 thousand people ( 2005 data), including about 16 thousand people living in urban conditions. In total, there are 60 settlements.

Economics

Industry

This industry is an important component of the economic complex of the region. The main producer is the metalworking and machine - building enterprise - Tractor Normals Plant OJSC, which provides collective agricultural enterprises and farms of the region with cultivators , high-pressure hoses to the hydraulic systems of tractors and agricultural machines, spare parts, etc. Due to the fact that significant part of the raw-rubble-gravel raw materials, significant production capacities were created on this base: OJSC Ozeryansky KZBGK, Olevsky gravel plant, CJSC Granit, co Quartz non-metallic mining plant. There are also food industry enterprises in the district: Olevsky Bakery Plant OJSC, the Olevsky Canning and Drying Plant joint venture for the processing of agricultural products, fruits, berries (the plant, the last few years, works only "on paper"). An important place in the industrial potential of the region is occupied by JSC Electrotechnical Porcelain Factory, as well as Olevsky, Belokorovitsky and inter-farm leshozes.

Agriculture

Characteristic of the region is the production of meat, milk, potatoes , grain, flax , hops , etc. This industry is represented by 19 collective agricultural enterprises and one subsidiary farm.

Construction

There are 9 construction organizations in the district. The main source of investment for the construction remains the Chernobyl Fund , which finances the construction of social facilities and gasification.

Amber Field

In 2014, colossal amber deposits were discovered. Illegal mining organized [2] [3] [4] .

Transport

The territory of the district is crossed by one railway from the southeast to northwest: Kiev - Kovel . The length of public roads is 397 km.
