Biography

From 1743 he studied theology, and later philology at the University of Leipzig .

In 1748, with the help of friends, he was admitted to the Collegium Carolinum (now Braunschweig Technical University ), where he studied English.

He began to write poetry in his youth under the strong influence of the poet Friedrich von Hagedorn , who supported him and encouraged Ebert's interest in English and literature.

He was friends with the poets of the literary circle of Johann Christoph Gottshed , among whom were F. Klopstock , H. Gellert , Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener , I. Schlegel .

In 1753, he became a professor and lectured on history. In 1770, Ebert began teaching Greek. In 1775 he became a canon in the church of St. Kyriak in Braunschweig. In 1780 he was appointed adviser.

The greatest popularity was brought to him in 1751 by the translation of the poem by Eduard Jung in nine books, “ The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality, 1742-1745 , German. ” Klagen und Nachtgedanken über Leben, Tod und Unsterblichkeit ” ), which was of great importance for the formation of literary tastes of that era.

His "Episteln und vermischte Gedichte" (1789) stand out in the lyrics of his time for ease and artistic simplicity.
