Mazepa (1827)
In 1821, Boulanger entered the National Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris, and in 1827 he exhibited his painting " Mazepa " (later the painting was acquired by the Rouen muse). The bright color of this picture had a tremendous effect and was especially liked by the romantics grouping near Victor Hugo , which opened Boulanger access to this circle and brought the friendship of the great poet, who later dedicated several of his works to him [1] .
According to the “ Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary ”, the best of Boulanger paintings: the watercolor “The assassination of the Duke of Orleans by the Duke of Burgon on Barbet Street” (1833); several paintings, the plots of which are borrowed from Notre Dame de Paris, Lucrezia Borgia by Victor Hugo, Othello and King Lear by Shakespeare (1834); The Triumph of Petrarch (1836); “Beatrice Laura and Orsalina” (1840), for which the painter received the Legion of Honor ; The Holy Family (1845); "St. Jerome and the Runaway Romans" (1855); Romeo Buying Poison (1857); "Dreaming Wellleda"; “Dance of the Witches” (1861); “Do not be afraid of anything, you are carrying Caesar and his fate” (1865); “Long live the fun!” (1866); The Fire of Sodom (1867) [1] .
In addition, he painted many portraits and decorated the hall of the states-general in the Palace of Versailles with a frieze depicting the procession of the states-general in Versailles on May 4, 1789.
In 1860, Boulanger was appointed director of the Dijon School of Arts and worked in this position until his death.
Louis Boulanger died on March 5, 1867 in the city of Dijon . Friendship with Hugo, which lasted a lifetime, was the subject of admiration for contemporaries. "Monsieur Hugo lost Boulanger," said Baudelaire , learning about the death of the artist.
