The 68th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed on March 18, 1943 by renaming the 46th Fighter Aviation Regiment as the Guards Regiment for the exemplary performance of combat missions and the courage and heroism shown on the basis of the Order of the NPO of the USSR [1] .

In contrast to the battles for the capture of the city of Klaipeda ( Memel ), the 68th Guards Fighter Aviation Order of Kutuzov regiment was given the honorary name "Klaipeda" [5] .

Rewards

For the exemplary performance of command missions in battles with German invaders during a breakthrough of the enemy’s defense south-east of Riga and the valor and courage shown, the 68th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was awarded the Order of Kutuzov of the 3rd degree by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 22, 1944.

Distinguished Regiment Warriors

  •   Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich , senior lieutenant, deputy squadron commander of the 46th fighter aviation regiment of the 14th mixed aviation division on August 28, 1941 was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumous). One of the first in the Great Patriotic War made an air ram.
  •   Kolyadin Viktor Ivanovich , Major, squadron commander of the 68th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 5th Guards Fighter Aviation Division of the 11th Fighter Aviation Corps of the 3rd Air Army was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on June 29, 1945. Gold Star No. 6963
  •   Lagutenko Ivan Nikitovich , Major, Deputy Commander of the 68th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 5th Guards Fighter Aviation Division of the 11th Fighter Aviation Corps of the 3rd Air Army on August 18, 1945 was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Gold Star No. 8766
