My little armalite

My Little Armalite (also known as Baby Armalite ), also known as Little Armalite or Me Little Armalite [1], is a song of the rebels of the Irish Republican Army , dedicated to assault rifles of the Armalite series - the most common type of small arms among Irish rebels [2] .

Content

Background

The history of the song goes back to the 1970s, when the "temporary" wing of the IRA secretly purchased samples of modern weapons at that time: the American Armalite AR-15 assault rifle was most often supplied to Irish rebels [3] , although they included soldiers armed with more modern AR-18 . Both samples had a caliber of 5.56 mm. However, the song itself speaks of a civilian version of the AR-180, which was freely sold in the United States.

Story

The main character of the song recounts skirmishes and battles in which he participated, being an IRA fighter. In the beginning, he appears defenseless, as a British soldier mocks him, in addition, also beating the hero. Over time, the hero is trained in shooting and gives an armed rebuff to the British police and soldiers, even despite their superiority in power and equipment. The song mentions places such as Bogside (district of Derry ), Crossmaglen (a place in the county of Armagh ), Kilwilki (district of the city and metropolitan area Lurgan ), Falls Road (also in Lurgan), Belfast and Ballymerfi. The slang word " Provos " means colleagues from the Provisional IRA (from the word " Provisional ").

There are several variations of the song, in each of which slightly different places may be presented, and some verses are not performed.

And it's down in the Bogside, that's where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

I was stopped by a soldier, said he, You are a swine,
He beat me with his baton and he kicked me in the groin,
I bowed and I scraped, sure me manners were polite
But all the time I'm thinking of me little Armalite.

And it's down in Crossmaglen, sure that's where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

Sure a brave RUC man came up into our street
Six hundred British soldiers were gathered round his feet
Come out, ye cowardly Fenians, said he, come out and fight.
But he cried, I'm only joking, when he heard the Armalite.

Sure it's down in Kilwilkie, that's where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

Sure, the army came to visit me, 'twas in the early hours,
With Saladins and Saracens and Ferret armored cars
They thought they had me cornered, but I gave them all a fright
With the armor piercing bullets of my little Armalite.

And it's down in the Falls Road, that's where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

When Tuzo came to Belfast, he said, The battle's won,
Said General Ford, We're winning sir, we have them on the run.
But corporals and privates on patrol at night,
Said, Send for reinforcements, it's the bloody Armalite.

And it's up in Ballymurphy, that's where I long to be,
Lying in the dark with a Provo company,
A comrade on me left and another on me right
And a clip of ammunition for my little Armalite.

Ended in Bogside , where I often visited,
I hugged with a rifle there in the dark.
Comrades there were with me from all sides,
With me a pouch, Armalight and a cartridge for the enemy.

“Pig!” - the soldier shouted to me and braked famously,
He hit me with a ramrod and kicked me in the groin.
He bent like a shaft, but still resisted
And Armalight always remembered the rifle.

Ended up at Crossmaglen , where I often went,
I hugged with a rifle there in the dark.
Comrades there were with me from all sides,
With me a pouch, Armalight and a cartridge for the enemy.

The brave riot police came to the street in the morning,
He brought six hundred British soldiers for courage.
“Come on, Fenians,” he shouts, “crawl out,”
But as Armalight heard - he cried: "Ay-ah-ah!"

Ended in Kilwilki, where I often visited,
I hugged with a rifle there in the dark.
Comrades there were with me from all sides,
With me a pouch, Armalight and a cartridge for the enemy.

With dawn, their formidable armada quickly arrived,
Armored vehicles can not be found everywhere, the armor on them is what you need.
And they thought khan to me - gave them a full rebuff!
He shot them point-blank with their armor-piercing ones.

Ended up in Falls Road , where I often went,
I hugged with a rifle there in the dark.
Comrades there were with me from all sides,
With me a pouch, Armalight and a cartridge for the enemy.

Our Tuzo learned everything about victory in Belfast.
“We are winning, the enemy is running!” Ford said with a grin.
The corporal patrol said: “Not a damn thing!
Armalight is heard at night, the war is not over! ”

And in Ballymurfy, too, where I have often been,
I hugged with a rifle there in the dark.
Comrades there were with me from all sides,
With me a pouch, Armalight and a cartridge for the enemy.
