Criticism and feedback

The film was screened at the Locarno Film Festival in 1994. According to the testimony of film critic Andrei Plakhov , Locarno took the film as evidence of the high professionalism of Russian directing. The classic style, spectacular scenery and costumes, staged power and psychological play of actors were noted [3] . According to Plakhov, the director managed to recreate on the screen the emotional, cultural and architectural context of Petrograd in the 1920s. Russian actors (Boris Nevzorov stands out among them) play in exact accordance with the style of the picture and bring something “super” into it:

Dark forces inside a person, mysteriously correlated with historical and natural disasters, are still more of a Russian, “Dostoevsky” origin. Although Isabelle Huppert with her verified rational manner of the game did everything to fit into this context ” [3] .

Russian critics draw a parallel with another French version of Russian classical prose, with Valery Todorovsky’s “ Moscow Evenings ”. Both pictures are cool and stylish, but in “Flooding” there is more than what can be called “the logic of passion” [3] .

The reviewer Andrei Titov (“Kommersant”) believes that the film turned out to be absolutely French in style, and the participation of refined Isabelle Huppert does not add to him the Russian flavor [4] .
