Biography

Player Career

Popovich made his debut in 1953 with Red Star , in this club he played for the next 11 years, winning five league titles and three cups . In total, from March 1950 to June 1965, he played 499 matches for a team from the capital of Yugoslavia, scoring 38 goals. After Popovich left his homeland, he played in Germany for two Stuttgart teams, Stuttgart and Stuttgart Kickers . In 1968, he moved to South America , where he ended his career in Venezuela with Deportivo Canarias .

Popovich went to the 1958 World Cup as a substitute, not having played a single match, and played all six matches of his team at the 1962 World Cup in Chile . In total, he played 20 matches in the main team, in addition, he played for Yugoslavia B and the youth team , and also participated in the 1956 Olympic tournament in Melbourne , where he won a silver medal.

Coaching career

Coach career began Popovich, where he ended his playing career, in Venezuela. His first club was “ Portuguesa ”, then he moved to Colombia , where he achieved success in his very first year, winning the national championship with “ Santa Fe ”. He continued to ply between the two countries of South America until returning to his homeland, where he coached the " Napredac " and " Trepcha ". In 1984, he returned to Colombia, and then in 1991, with his former club, the Red Star, won the Intercontinental Football Cup . From 1992 to 1993, he also worked as a Peru national team coach.
