The Marfo-Mariinsky Monastery is a female Orthodox monastery of the Belgorod diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church , located in Belgorod , opened in 1999 at the Intercession Church .

Content

Foundation and Development

In 1993, work was intensified in Belgorod to restore the Pokrovsky Cathedral, which had been inactive for decades and was badly damaged (1791). In January 1994, the first service was held in a temporary church, and in 1995, the first liturgy was served in the restored cathedral. At the temple, it was decided to open a convent

On December 28, 1999, by the definition of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the opening of the Martha-Mariinsky Nunnery in Belgorod was blessed [1] .

There are two churches on the territory of the monastery - Pokrovsky and Uspensko-Nikolaevsky [2] .

The Assumption-Nikolaev Cathedral, for the construction of which Peter I donated money, was built in 1701. In the early 1930s it was closed and a bakery was created on its territory. In 1986, the temple was taken under state protection as an architectural monument, in 1998 it was transferred to the church , and in 2005 it was restored [2] .

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest churches in Belgorod, built in 1791. In 1837, the side chapel of Mitrofan of Voronezh was added, in 1865 - of Tikhon Zadonsky. The architectural style is early classicism. After closing in the late 1920s, there was a prison in it, after Belgorod became the center of the newly formed Belgorod region - mechanical workshops. In 1991, the Russian church began work on the restoration and restoration of the temple. Since 1993, it has become a monastery church [3] .
