International scientific name

Otodectes cynotis , 1838

O. cynotis has a wrinkled cuticle . The first two pairs of legs at the legs on a short leg are rooted fastening plaques. The third and fourth pairs of legs are much shorter, have two long bristles and protrude beyond the sides of the body. Females are 400 to 500 microns long and 270 to 300 microns wide, males are much smaller, 315–395 long and 210–295 microns wide.

Males often mate with a female in the telonimph stage; fertilization occurs shortly before the molting of the females. The female lays about five eggs per day on the surface of the ear canal. Four days later, six-legged larvae appear that pass through two stages of the octopus nymph to the adult tick stage. The whole process takes about three weeks.

O. cynotis lives in the inner ear of animals. The tick pierces the epidermis with its chelicera and feeds on the protruding tissue fluid and lymph .
