Filippov, Gennady Alekseevich

Gennady Alekseevich Filippov was born on January 6, 1932 in the village of Ordanovka in Ukraine .

In 1951, he graduated from high school with a silver medal in Voronezh , and in the same year entered the Faculty of Power Engineering at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI). In 1957 he graduated from Moscow Power Engineering Institute with a degree in Turbine Engineering (student of M. Ye. Deutsch ^[1] ) with a qualification of a mechanical engineer. After graduation, he was left at the Department of Steam and Gas Turbines MPEI, where he worked until 1978 (since 1966 - associate professor, since 1972 - professor) ^{[2] [3]} .

In 1961 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of technical sciences, in 1971 - the dissertation for the degree of doctor of technical sciences ^[3] .

In 1978, he was appointed director of the All-Union (later - All-Russian) Research and Design Institute of Atomic Energy Engineering (VNIIAM); worked in this position until 2005 ^{[2] [3]} .

On December 23, 1987, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991 - the Russian Academy of Sciences , RAS ) in the Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Power Engineering (power and electrical engineering). On May 26, 2000 he was elected a full member of the RAS ^[2] .

In 2005-2007, he was the scientific director of VNIIAM (part of the Atomenergomash group of companies). Currently, he is a consultant in a number of organizations (OKB Gidropress, IBRAE RAS), works as a professor at MPEI and at Tomsk Polytechnic University ^{[2] [3]} . At MPEI, he taught a number of new courses on the gas dynamics of two-phase media and turbines of nuclear power plants ^[4] .

He is a member of the Bureau of the Department of Energy, Engineering, Mechanics and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a member of several councils of the Russian Academy of Sciences and editorial boards of journals, the chairman of the dissertation for the Doctoral Council of OKB Gidropress, the chairman of the Council for Energy of the Higher Attestation Commission and the Russian Federal Property Fund ^[4] .

G. A. Filippov obtained important scientific results in the field of gas dynamics of two-phase media, the design and calculation of the effective flow parts of turbines of nuclear power plants , the theoretical and experimental justification of a new method of protecting metals from wear through the use of surface-active substances , the development of new types of equipment for nuclear power plants and thermal power plants ^{[ 4]} . G. A. Filippov, together with his colleagues, carried out the first research in the world of turbine blades with a geometric effect on the distribution of the degree of reactivity and flow parameters along the height, and the efficiency of this type of blades was experimentally confirmed; the results of these studies formed the basis for technical solutions for designing the exhaust compartments of powerful steam turbines with maximum blade height used by leading world turbine building companies ^[1] .

Author of over 200 scientific publications, including 12 books. Under the scientific supervision and with the advice of G. A. Filippov, more than 30 candidates and doctors of sciences were prepared ^[4] .
