Biography
Born in 1914 in a large Kalmyk family in the village of Dolban. After receiving secondary education, he entered the Astrakhan Pedagogical Institute. While studying at the institute, he was engaged in flight business in the Astrakhan aero club. Having left his studies at the pedagogical institute, he entered the military Chuguev Aviation School, which he graduated in 1939 with the rank of aviation lieutenant.
At the beginning of World War II he served in the western military districts. June 22, 1941, together with the commander of an aviation unit, entered into an unequal battle with fourteen enemy bombers. In the fourth battle with enemy pilots, which took place at the end of June 1941, he was seriously injured, after which he spent three months in the hospital. Since September 1941, he served in the 572nd fighter aviation regiment.
May 20, 1942 entered into an air battle with the enemy near Bataysk. On his I-16, an enemy bomber U-88 knocked out. The German shooter managed to knock out Vasily Darmaev’s plane, the pilot himself was seriously injured. He managed to land a damaged plane at the airfield, but an explosion occurred due to a broken gas tank, and Vasily Darmaev died in a fire.
