Biography
He was born the middle of three sons in a Jewish family. His father, the bookseller Lipot Kohn (1842-1909), changed his surname to Kertes during the period of the policy of active Magyarization of non-Hungarian minorities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire , died in 1909 from fleeting consumption; mother - Ernestina Hoffman (1863-1933) - owned a coffee-packing shop on Teleki Square. After the death of his father, he was largely raised by his mother’s brother in his village house in Szigetbecz , at the expense of his uncle he graduated from a commercial school in 1912. After training, he worked at the Budapest Stock Exchange [6] . In 1913 he had the first camera - “Ika” [6] . He participated in the First World War , was wounded ( 1915 ). In the postwar years, he worked at the stock exchange, tried to professionally engage in agriculture and beekeeping. In 1918, all the accumulated negatives were destroyed, after which Kertes decided to return to the stock market [6] .
In 1925 he settled in Paris to make money Andre sold prints at 25 francs per piece. At the same time, he began his collaboration with the editions of Frankfurter Illustrierte, Berliner Illustrirte , Nationale de Fiorenza, Sourire, Uhu and Times [6] . He got close to a group of Dadaists , met and made friends with Brassai . He created portraits of Mondrian , Alexander Calder , Marc Chagall , Sergey Eisenstein and others. His first solo exhibition (and in general the first solo exhibition of a photo artist in the world) took place in the avant-garde Paris gallery "Holy Spring" ( 1927 ), the first album "Children" was released in 1933 . Also in 1933, Kertes married Elizabeth Sali [6] . In 1933 creates a series of nudes "Distortion", in 1934 releases the album "Paris through the eyes of Andre Curtes." Since 1936 he lived in New York, where he signed a cooperation agreement with Keystone [6] . In 1937, Andre began working with Vogue , Harper's Bazaar [6] . In 1941 - 1944, as a subject of the enemy country, he could not publish his works . In 1944 receives US citizenship. Later, he decided to return his negatives from Paris, but more than half of them were lost during the shipment. From 1949 to 1962, Kertes worked for the Conde Nast publication [6] .
Creativity
Kertes' works are distinguished by their exquisite simplicity and accuracy of composition, the play of natural light and shadow, fog and artificial urban lighting, sharply precluding angles, shooting through glass and other obstacles for a “natural” point of view. His style deeply influenced many major masters of photography (in particular, Cartier-Bresson ) [7] . One of the key in the work of Kertes were portraits of reading people. He created a series of works under the general title On Reading ( Russian On Reading ), which was successfully exhibited in many galleries in the world [8] [9] .
Recognition and Legacy
In 1946 , Kerthes solo exhibition is held at the Art Institute of Chicago . In 1963 , his large retrospective exhibition was organized at the Paris National Library , in 1964 - at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1983 he was awarded the Legion of Honor , in 1984 bequeathed his legacy ( negatives and letters) to the French state.
