Story

Frans Hals , The Evangelist of Luke

In addition to the main work, engineer Yuri Loskutov trades in speculation with old icons. One of Loskutov’s buyers is a foreign tourist named Kate. At his request, Loskutov decided to steal from the museum the painting of Frans Hals "The Holy Luke ", for this he organizes a criminal group. The key role in the theft should be played by the recidivist thief who escaped from prison, Mikhail Karabanov, nicknamed “Graf”. Loskutov misleads Karabanov regarding the cost of the painting, but the Count, as an experienced recidivist, finds out the true value of the masterpiece that he has to abduct. And not wanting to be just a performer, Karabanov decides to hit the jackpot. To do this, he orders a copy of the painting from the artist Kulikov. Having received a copy, Karabanov artificially ages her and then plans to give it to Loskutov, and he goes to a foreign buyer ...

The investigation team in the case of the theft of the picture is headed by police colonel Ivan Sergeyevich Zorin. Having questioned the artist Kulikov and other witnesses, Colonel Zorin establishes the theft perpetrator and further, in the course of the investigation, exposes all the defendants in the case.

Interesting Facts

  • The film is based on true facts. The painting by Frans Hals “The Evangelist Luke ”, painted around 1623 - 1625 , was stolen in 1965 from an exhibition in Moscow. Ironically, the theft took place a few weeks after the statement of the then Minister of Culture of the USSR Ekaterina Furtseva that "Museums do not rob in the Soviet Union, unlike the West." However, the general public was not informed about the loss of the masterpiece, information that the film is based on real events is not available in the credits. There is an opinion that “the film should have fixed the real story and thus presented it as unreliable” [2] . Now the picture is in the Museum of Western and Eastern Art of Odessa , Ukraine [3] . One of the episodes of the documentary television series “ The investigation was conducted ... ” and the investigation film “The Wandering of“ St. Luke ”tells about the real facts of the theft of the picture. 27 shades of black ” [4] .
  • Along with the film theft “Theft” , released in the same year, the film was one of the first Soviet films to reveal the theme of the theft of works of art from museums in the USSR.
