History
In 1954, Sephardic Jews living in Caracas decided to buy a plot of land in the Mariperes area for the construction of a new synagogue to replace the synagogue in the El Conde area, which was to be demolished as part of the expansion of Bolivar Avenue, the main highway of the city at that time. In 1956, the first stone of the new synagogue was laid. In 1963, the synagogue was inaugurated for public visits and since then the synagogue has been used by the Jewish community of Caracas.
In January 2009, the synagogue suffered from the vandalism of a criminal group [1] during the escalation of relations between Venezuela and Israel after the conflict in Gaza in 2008-2009 [2] . Three former police officers and three civilians were convicted and each sentenced to 10 years in prison. [3]
