Content

Distribution and habitat

Distributed from Poland to the Himalayas and Japan [5] . It is found in Russia almost throughout Siberia, the Urals, in the west and in the center of the European part and in the Far East [2] .

It grows in the forests. In the Urals, N. cucullata grows in pine and birch-pine forests with a developed cover of green mosses and in dry green-pine forests [6] . Mesophytic, shade tolerant plant. It rarely lives in full light, and is more common in poor and dry, moderately acidic soils [6] .

N. cucullata sometimes forms large clusters of up to 1200-2000 individuals. In the Moscow Region, the maximum population density can be very high - up to 110–120 (150) individuals per m², the average density is about 10–12 individuals per 1 m². A characteristic feature of N. cucullata are sharp fluctuations in the number and density of populations. The cause of these fluctuations may be weather conditions and anthropogenic factors. In hot and dry years, a decrease in the number of individuals is observed up to their complete departure to secondary dormancy; in the age spectra, the proportion of adult individuals increases [6] .

Botanical Description

Tuberous geophyte [5] . Perennial herbaceous plant. The leaves are arranged alternately, small along the length of the stem and usually two leaves at the base of the plant, lanceolate, elliptical or ovoid. The flowers are pink in color with a white or purple hue, collected in a racemose or spike-shaped one-sided inflorescence. The fruit is a box [2] .

Value

Grown as an ornamental plant [2] .
