Career

From the age of 13, Previn began to act as a pianist, performing mainly jazz ; in 1945 - 1946 he made several jazz audio recordings. Since 1947 , Previn composed music for Hollywood films.

Previn's further musical career was related to academic music . Since 1967 , Previn has been a prominent figure in the world of conducting art. He headed such prominent orchestras as the musical director and chief conductor, such as the Houston Symphony ( 1967 - 1969 ), the London Symphony ( 1969 - 1979 ), the Pittsburgh Symphony ( 1976 - 1984 ), the Los Angeles Philharmonic ( 1985 - 1989 ), and the Royal Philharmonic (London; 1985 - 1991 ), Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra ( 2002 - 2006 ). Among the recordings by the Previn conductor are three Tchaikovsky ballets, a complete collection of Vaughan-Williams symphonies, all symphonies and piano concerts by Sergei Rachmaninov (with Vladimir Ashkenazi as a soloist), many significant works by Prokofiev and Richard Strauss .

Cinema

At the same time, Previn worked a lot for the cinema as a conductor and arranger. His greatest successes in this area date back to the 1950s and 1960s, when Previn’s work in cinema was awarded the Academy Award four times: for the films “Gigi” ( 1958 , original music, also won a Grammy Award), “Porgy and Bess ”(adaptation of Gershwin ’s opera, 1959 , revised score, together with Ken Darby), Irma la Douce ( 1963 , original music) and“ My Fair Lady ”( 1964 , original musical episodes).

Previn turned to the original composition in the academic genre quite late. The most famous is Previn's opera Tram Desire ( 1995 , based on the play by Tennessee Williams , first staged in San Francisco in 1998 under the direction of the author) and a concert for violin and orchestra, written by him for his fifth wife, the famous violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter , who was 34 years younger than him (this marriage lasted from 2002 to 2006 ; of the previous wives of Previn, the most famous actress is Mia Farrow , whom Previn was married to in 1970 - 1979 ), and Dory Previn, nee Langan , famous singer. The author of vocal works (three songs on verses by E. Dickinson and others).

Among a number of American and international Privin awards, the Glenn Gould Prize he received in 2005 stands out.
