Kim Won Il

Kim Won Il was born March 15, 1942 in Gimhae , South Gyeongsang Province . ^[1] Kim was a child when his father, an ardent Communist, moved to the north of the Korean Peninsula . ^[2] Kim Won Il was the eldest child in the family and, according to Confucian traditions , had to act as the head of the family.

Kim Won Il graduated from the Department of Korean Literature at Yongnam University and the literary department of the Sorabol Art Institute

Kim Won Il belongs to a generation of writers who saw the Korean War and the division of the nation as the source of all the troubles of the Korean people. War and the division of the nation led to the destruction of not only social but also family ties. ^[3]

The literary debut of the writer occurred in 1966 with the publication of the story "Algeria, 1961". however, the story “The Soul of Darkness” (“Oduum Hon”), which saw the light in 1973, brought fame to the writer. The story “Soul of Darkness”, like many other writers' works, is devoted to the topic of ideological confrontation.

The novel “A House with a Deep Courtyard” (Madan Kiphyn Chip, 1988) is a memory novel in which he describes a picture of a poor, hungry childhood. So, the literary critic Kim Jooeyun in the preface to the novel writes: “I read the novel“ A House with a Deep Courtyard ”, and I immediately remembered those years ... that stuffy, until the nausea, summer of the outbreak of the Korean War, I remembered a hungry, terrible, gloomy autumn, spring , summer and next fall. Several years flashed before me. At that time I was ten, eleven, twelve. ” ^[4] Based on the novel“ A House with a Deep Courtyard ”, a television series with the same name was shot. The series was broadcast from January 8, 1990 to January 30, 1990 by MBC .

The story “Soul of Darkness” belongs to a series of stories narrating about the events that took place in the late 1940s.

In the work “Prisoners of the Soul” (“Mayme Kamok”, 1990), the writer mentions Anatoly Rybakov ’s novel “ Children of the Arbat ”. The narrator is a manager of a small publishing house who lives with his family in Seoul, having visited the Moscow International Book Fair and wants to publish the novel Children of the Arbat faster than his competitors. the main theme of the work: the life of contemporaries, "the April 19th generation."
