Description
Large and medium-sized short-winged staphilinus beetles, body length from 13 to 20 mm. The width of the head is approximately equal to the width of the pronotum, elytra and abdomen. The head is transverse; neck 2 times narrower than head. Pronotum sub-square or transverse. The scutellum is large, triangular in shape with two transverse keels. Elytra (combined) of approximately equal width and length. It differs from the close genera in large sizes and crescent-shaped mandibles without distinct denticles. Paws are 5-segmented; 1–4 segments of all pairs of tarsi in both sexes wide with setae on ventral side. They live in the humid forests of Australia and Tasmania [1] .
Systematics
The systematic position of Antimerus inside the tribe Staphylinini remains unclear, the genus is placed in an indefinite position group ( incertae sedis ) and is similar to Quediina and Xanthopygina . The only sympatric genus with which one can confuse antimeruses is the genus Lonia Strand, 1943 , but it has mandibles with teeth and simple tarsi of the middle and hind legs [1] [2] .
