  • The 14th day of the 4th moon of the 21st year of Tempo (according to the Julian calendar - May 4, 749).

Origin

The name Nengo was borrowed [5] :

  • from the Book of Changes : 「聖人 感人 心 而 天下 和平」 [5] ;
  • from Li Ji : 「国 治 而后 天下 平」 [5] .

Events

 
The rebellion led by Fujiwara no Hirocugu. The red arrows show the forces of the rebels, the blue - pro-government troops.
  • 737 (9th year of Tempo) - smallpox epidemic;
  • 740 year (8th moon of the 12th year of Tempo) - at the court of Emperor Shomu in Nara, Kibi no Makibi and Gambo conspired to discredit dazai-senga (vice-governor of the Kyushu government ) Fujiwara no Hirotsugu [7] ;
  • 740 year (9th moon of the 12th year of Tempo) - an uprising led by Fujiwara no Hirotsugu ( Japanese 広 広 嗣 の 乱 ) in response to the increased influence of Gambo [7] ;
  • 740 year (9th moon of the 12th year of Tempo) - an army of 17,000 men under the command of Ono no Azumabito ( Japanese 大野 東 人 ) went to Kyushu to suppress the riot [7] ;
  • 740 year (10th moon of the 12th year of Tempo) - decisive victory over the rebels; Fujiwara no Hirotsugu was beheaded in Hizen province [7] ;
  • 740 - transfer of the capital to Kuni-kyo [8] .
  • 741 year (13th year of Tempo) - on the initiative of the emperor, the construction of provincial kokubun-ji temples and provincial women's monasteries of kokubun-niji was started throughout the country [9] . “Kokubun-ji” was often referred to as “konkomyo shitenno gokoku no tera” (meaning “temples to protect the surroundings under the auspices of the four golden light deities”). Kokubun-niji were called “hoket metuzai-no tera” (which means “a monastery cleansing sins with the lotus sutra ”) [9] ;
  • 743 year (15th year of Tempo) - the emperor issues a decree on the construction of a statue of the Big Buddha ( Daibutsu ); the statue will be placed at Todai-ji Monastery, Nara [10] ;
  • 743 - the Law on perpetual ownership of cultivated land ( Jap. 墾 田永 代 私 財 法 ) was passed ;
  • 744 year (16th year of Tempo) - the capital was moved to Naniva-kyo (in the territory of the modern city of Osaka ) [7] ;
  • 745 year (17th year of Tempo) - the capital returned to Heijou-kyo ( Nara ), the construction of the great Buddha was completed [11] ;
  • 749 (the 21st year of Tempo) - after the 25-year reign of the emperor, Shomu handed over the reins to his daughter, Takano-hime, the future empress Koken . After renouncing, Shomu became a Buddhist priest, the first of the Tenjo daijз . Empress Komyo also vowed to become a Buddhist nun. [12]
