Biography

 

Born in the village of Zubrets, Buchatsky district, Ternopil region . Igor's parents were on earnings in St. Petersburg , so he grew up with his grandparents [2] .

He studied at the Zubretsk secondary school of I-III levels, was interested in history and geography [3] . He studied in the fifth year of the Faculty of Geography, Ivan Franko Lviv National University, majoring in Organization Management [4] .

He worked as a journalist for the Sportanalitik online publication [5] . He was the initiator of the creation of the Russian-language sports online publication allsport24.com, the site was finally launched after his death [6] .

Igor Kostenko was an active editor of Ukrainian Wikipedia (nickname Ig2000 ) [7] . For two and a half years of participation, he created more than 280 articles, made more than 1600 edits. One of the written articles subsequently received the status of "good." He also took an active part in promoting Wikipedia on social networks, through which he tried to attract new editors [8] .

He was fond of sports, in particular football, was a fan of the Lviv “Carpathians” .

On Euromaidan

From the first days he took an active part in the events of Euromaidan , repeatedly traveled to Kiev . In particular, he was on the Maidan on the night of November 30, 2013, when the students were dispersed by the Golden Eagle. The last time I went to Kiev Euromaidan in the evening of February 18, 2014, and together with other Lviv residents began to help build barricades. On the morning of February 20, Igor was killed during a confrontation in the center of Kiev. His body was found near the October Palace (ICCA FPU) on Institutskaya Street. 2 bullets hit Igor: one in the head and the other in the chest [9] . In addition, fractures of leg bones were found in the deceased [10] .

On August 10, 2014 in London at the closing ceremony of the annual Wikimania conference, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales proclaimed Igor Kostenko the Wikipedia of the Year [11] [12] . On September 13, 2014, Jimmy Wales presented the award to Igor Kostenko’s relatives in Kiev at the YES international annual conference.

Rewards

  • The title of Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Golden Star Order (November 21, 2014, posthumous) - for civic courage, patriotism, heroic upholding of the constitutional principles of democracy, human rights and freedoms, selfless service to the Ukrainian people, shown during the Revolution of Dignity [13]
