Biography
According to Spanish tradition, Guzman was born in Leon . Historians also suggest that he was a Muslim who converted to Christianity . A wheat export permit, signed in 1288 , where Guzman El Bueno received permission to export crops, said it was very likely to come from Morocco . In a document of 1297, the king of Castile refers to Guzman as a “vassal,” that is, not to the Spaniard. This document is the property of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia . In 1292, King Castile Sancho IV the Bold ( 1284 - 1295 ), after a six-month siege, took Tarifu Castle. The garrison commander in the castle was appointed a Leon knight named Alonso Perez de Guzmán, already called El Bueno, “Good”, thanks to his exploits in the service of the last king Alfonso X.
In 1294, Alonso Perez de Guzmán received fishing permission from the King of Castile Sancho IV as a reward for the heroic defense of Tarifa from the Moors. He built the Sahara de los Atunes castle as a defensive castle, which became its seasonal residence and tuna processing site.
In 1296, Alonso de Guzmán, acting on behalf of the King of Castile Sancho IV the Bold, defended Tarifa from the five thousandth Moroccan army under the command of Infanta Juan, who rebelled against his older brother. Infant Juan led the eldest son Guzman, whom they entrusted to his cares, to the gate of the fortress, and declared that if the castle was not surrendered, the commandant of the fortress would see the death of his son. Alonso de Guzmán took an oath to the king of Castile to protect Tarifa from the enemies of the kingdom and the Catholic faith and was going to keep his word of chivalry. He refused to hand over the castle and even threw his knife besieger down the wall, and then returned to the castle, where he began to dine with his wife. But cries of horror and alarm caused the commandant again on the ramparts. Infant Juan ordered the boy's throat to be cut. The Moors , allies of Juan, were horrified by the atrocities of the infant, and returned back through the Strait of Gibraltar . Don Juan of Castile, fearing a return to Morocco , fled to Granada .
Castile King Sancho IV the Bold , learning about Alonso Perez de Guzmán’s feat near Tarifa, sent him a letter comparing him with the biblical Abraham and asking him to come to the court. During the audience, the king hugged Alonso and exclaimed: “There is a knight who should serve as an example to everyone!” Alonso de Guzmán remained a loyal supporter of the king, and later his widow and son.
He received possession from the new king of Castile Ferdinand IV of the land between Guadiana and Guadalquivir , becoming 1st lord Sanlúcar de Barrameda ( 1297 ). The castles of Sanlúcar de Barrameda , Rota , Chipiona and Trebuchen passed under his authority. In 1299, he received tuna fisheries under Conil de la Frontera , and in 1303, under Chiclan de la Frontera , populating these places. In 1307, he received possession of the lord Vejer de la Frontera in exchange for Safra and Falconer in Extremadura . In addition, he owned the lord Marchena and income from the Medina-Sidonia .
Alonso Perez de Guzmán died on September 19, 1309 in a battle with the Moors near Granada.
