History

The first information about the intention to connect the Vindavsky ( Ventspils ) port with the provinces of central Russia dates back to 1867 , but for many reasons only after 30 years (May 21, 1897 ) the Society of the Rybinsk-Bologovsky Railway , renamed the Society of the Moscow-Vindava-Rybinsk Railway the road was instructed to begin construction of the line. In the spring of 1898, under the leadership of the chief engineer of communications S.A. Shtoltsman, the laying of the Moscow - Kreuzburg ( Krustpils ) and Tukkum ( Tukums ) - Vindava lines began, opened for traffic on September 11, 1901 . And finally, on November 11, 1904, traffic was opened on the Zilan (Zilany) - Tukkum [1] line , of which the current Jelgava - Krustpils line is a part. It was decided to lead the Zilan-Tukkum line through Mitava ( Jelgava ), since the Russian Ministry of Railways did not want to transfer the lines Riga-Jelgava, Riga-Tukums and Riga-Bolderay to private hands.

After the October Revolution in 1918, the railway was nationalized and transferred to the People's Commissariat of Railways . At that time, the German army was the real owner of the line, back in 1916, it began to alter the Ventspils-Jelgava-Daudzeva line to the European gauge. During the First World War , the bridge over the Daugava in the Krustpils – Daugava section was damaged, as a result of which it was possible to completely restore the movement on the line and alter it to the 1520 mm gauge only in 1930 [2] .

According to the LDz schedule for 1992, passenger communication on the line was provided by two pairs of suburban trains 6322/6323 and 6324/6321 [3] , which consisted of an M62 locomotive and 2 common wagons .

Accidents

  • On November 11, 1998, at about 3 a.m., on the Vecumnieki – Lacplesis section, 14 diesel tanks left the rail. Exploding fuel caused a severe fire.
  • On December 9, 2008, a locomotive and two cars at the Lacplesis station went off the rails. The causes of the accident are recognized: the wrong decision made by the station attendant, who did not have the necessary qualifications and deficiencies in the design of switches.
  • February 4, 2010 at the station Taurkalne there was a collision of two freight trains. The locomotive crashed into the last of the tanks standing at the station train, which, fortunately, was empty.

On November 19, 2010, pyrocondensate leaked from the railway tank at the Vecumnieki station. People and the environment were not affected.
