Ocular hypertension

Ocular hypertension is a clinical term meaning elevated intraocular pressure with no damage to the optic nerve and loss of visual field . [1] [2]

For most people, the normal range of intraocular pressure changes is from 10 to 21 mm Hg. [3] [4] . Exceeding this range of intraocular pressure is an important risk factor for the development of glaucoma .

Studies of ocular hypertension, a large multicenter randomization of clinical trials have shown that timely treatment of ocular hypertension slows down or prevents the formation of primary open-angle glaucoma. [5] Thus, most people with a consistent increase in intraocular pressure above 21 mm Hg, especially if they have other risk factors, should take care to prevent vision loss from glaucoma.

Content

Pathophysiology

The intraocular pressure is determined by the difference in the amount of fluid formed by the secretion of the ciliary body and the amount of fluid that is removed from the eye through the trabecular meshwork .

Treatment

Ocular hypertension is eliminated either by eye drops or by laser intervention. Eye drops reduce intraocular pressure by reducing the secretion of intraocular fluid and / or by increasing its outflow. Laser trabeculoplasty helps to reduce intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of intraocular fluid through the trabecular network. The use of marijuana against the increase in intraocular pressure from ocular hypertension or glaucoma is not equally indicated for medical use due to lack of effectiveness. [6]
