Monument to Alexander I (Moscow)

The monument to Emperor Alexander I is a bronze sculpture in the center of Moscow in memory of the All-Russian Emperor Alexander I by the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation , the sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov and the Honored Architect of the Russian Federation Igor Voskresensky . The monument is a sculpture of Alexander I in full uniform, standing on a pedestal. The emperor holds a sword in his hands, an enemy weapon lies beneath his feet, a raincoat is thrown over his shoulders. Bronze bas-reliefs with images of the Battle of Borodino , other battles and commanders of the Patriotic War of 1812, as well as Alexander, Seraphim Sarovsky and two temples - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the Kazan Cathedral [3] are installed opposite the monument.

The project of the monument was determined by the results of the competition, in which 8 sculptors participated, including Zurab Tsereteli . Contestants presented several options. In August 2014, the finalists of the competition were determined. The final draft of the monument was chosen from the works of Salavat Shcherbakov , Andrei Kovalchuk and Alexander Rukavishnikov through closed voting [6] .

The grand opening of the monument took place on November 20, 2014, attended by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin , Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill , Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky and Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin [2] . Vladimir Putin delivered a solemn speech [2] :

"Here, along the walls of the Kremlin, this beautiful garden was laid out. For more than a century and a half, it has been named after Emperor Alexander I. It is one of the beloved, picturesque parks of the capital. At the same time, the greatness of our history is felt here. Literally everything is permeated with the memory of the military glory of Russia, of those who defended, defended and protected our Fatherland. And the monument to Alexander I will rightfully occupy its place of honor here."
