Ata Beyit Memorial Complex

The Ata-Beyit memorial complex in the village of Chon-Tash, 30 km from Bishkek, was built on the initiative of the first President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev in 2000, in memory of the victims of repression of the 30s.

Description

The bodies of 137 Kyrgyz citizens of 19 nationalities who were shot without trial during the Stalinist repressions are buried almost all the color of the Kyrgyz intelligentsia - these are the chairmen of the Council of People's Commissars Yu. Abdrakhmanov and B. Isakeev, the secretary of the Kirobkom T. Aitmatov, the people's commissar of agriculture E. Esenamanov, the people's commissar of education K. Tynystanov, and many party leaders. Chon-Tash is the only documented crime scene of a state against its own people in Kyrgyzstan . MK “Ata-Beyit” is a structural unit of the Bishkek City Hall. The memorial complex (total area - 2 hectares) includes: a sculptural composition and a museum, a brick kiln - a place where 137 people were shot and originally buried; memorial monument. The Ata-Beyit Museum (400 m²), which is translated from Kyrgyz as “Tomb of the Fathers”, presents documents and photographs of the political development of Kyrgyzstan in the 1920s and 30s, and materials on the victims of the Chon-Tash burial. The authors of the museum's exposition are research associates of the State Historical Museum A. Israilov, O. Ilyinskaya, K. Kimalaev.

The bodies of the dead were found thanks to the recognition of one of the former employees of the NKVD of Kyrgyzstan. The father of Bubura Kydyralieva, while dying in 1980, told her daughter the secret of the execution during the Stalinist repressions.

After her coming of age, she made this secret public. The bodies were dumped in a brick kiln on Chon-Tash: Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jews. Among them are the founders of the Kyrgyz Soviet state, the first people's commissars.

Excavation specialists discovered a 4 × 4 m space at a depth of 40 cm, which contained 137 human skeletons, some of them carrying personal documents. After the exhumation, the bodies were transferred to the Ata Beyit cemetery (“Fathers' cemetery”) 100 meters from the excavation.

According to archival data, in the 30s of the XX century, several tens of thousands of people were repressed and executed in Kyrgyzstan. According to official figures, 12.5 million citizens of the USSR became victims of Stalinist repressions. On August 30, 1991, a state funeral ceremony was held for the reburial of the remains of victims of Stalinist repressions found on Chon-Tash. And the next day, August 31, 1991 independence of sovereign Kyrgyzstan was proclaimed. On the right side of the museum is a plaque on which the names of the victims are engraved. November 8 is celebrated as a day of remembrance for the victims of repression of 1937-1938.

The Ata Beyit Museum Museum stores personal items and archival materials of the repressed. During the years of great terror of 1937-1938, more than one and a half million people were arrested in the USSR and almost half of them were shot. According to archival data, in the 30s of the 20th century, several tens of thousands of people were repressed and executed in Kyrgyzstan.

On June 14, 2008, the great Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov was buried in the historical and memorial complex Ata Beyit.
