Rioplate spanish

Speakers and dialects of the Spanish language of Argentina. Posted by Berthe Helena Vidal de Battini. [one]

The rioplatan spoken Spanish ( Spanish Español rioplatense ) formed the basis of the national Spanish version of Argentina and, in part, Uruguay and Paraguay . It is based on the divergent dialect of the first Spanish colonists - gaucho , which, due to the relative sparseness of the region and the economic neglect of the region during the Spanish colonization of America, revealed a number of peculiar features both in comparison with Madrid, and in comparison with the initially more important resource colonies like Mexico and Peru.

History

The persistent preservation of Vseo , including under the influence of the norms of neighboring Portuguese-speaking Brazil, gave this region a certain uniqueness at an early stage of development. The de-buccalization of many consonants also took place, although the conservative tradition later slowed down the penetration of this phenomenon into orthoepic norms. But the most significant for the development of the autonomous features of this dialect was the mass immigration of the southern Italian population to Argentina at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, which were concentrated in Buenos Aires . It is the melodic intonation pattern that allows you to almost instantly distinguish Rioplatian Spanish from a number of other dialects and dialects. Under the powerful influence of the language of Italian immigrants in the capital, a peculiar slang sociolect Lunfardo also developed, part of the vocabulary of which later turned into standard Rioplatian Spanish . It was this metropolitan dialect that spread from the capital throughout the south of the country during the so-called Desert Conquest , and then was popularized by the metropolitan media in the 20th – 21st centuries in the regions of Argentina, as well as in Uruguay and Paraguay. At the same time, more archaic Spanish dialects of the Andean variety (Cordoba, Santiago del Esther, Jujuy ) continue to be preserved on the northwestern periphery of Argentina itself.

Features

  • The total distribution of full Voseo : the classic pronoun-verb “vos tenés” with rarer but possible variants “vos tienes” and “tú tenés”.
  • In “folk” phonetics, aspiration / de-buccalization / lenitia and “ingestion” [2] -s are often found at the end of a syllable .
  • The merger of ll ([ʎ]) and y ([j]) in [ʃ], called weakened iotization ( deaf realty ) [2] . This phenomenon appeared in the speech of young women in the last third of the 20th century, and currently covers both sexes and almost all age groups.
  • Preference for simple past forms ( preterite : dije ) over compound ones ( perfection : he dicho )
  • Preference for peripheral analytical constructs ( voy a ir ) over synthetic ( iré ) for expressing bud. vr.
  • Musical intonational pattern of speech, borrowed from the Neapolitan language.
  • Lexical Italianisms ( lavorare > laburar ; mangiare > manyar )
  • Preservation of a number of obsolete tokens in Spain ( lindo ).
  • For a number of other features, Rioplatian is quite standard for American varieties of Spanish. For example, total seseo leads to replacing cocer with phonetically unambiguous cocinar so as not to confuse it with coser , and caza is replaced with cacería to enhance the phonetic contrast with casa .

Talking

The Rioplatian dialect in the writings of some scholars is divided into several smaller territorial varieties: port (porteño) Spanish (Buenos Aires and most of the province of the same name), Patagonian Spanish (patagónico) to the south, and inter-river / coastal Spanish (litoraleño) to north of the capital.
