The magazine was founded by priest Nikolai Sergievsky with the support of Metropolitan of Moscow Filaret (Drozdov) . The editor of the magazine was subsequently Archpriest N. A. Sergievsky ; The journal was published with the collaboration of priests G.P. Smirnov-Platonov , P.A. Preobrazhensky and A.M. Ivantsov-Platonov .
His character was predominantly journalistic; the magazine discussed projects of church reforms and the needs of the church, as well as the phenomena of public life, without a special church coloring. The works of A. M. Ivantsov-Platonov on Christian apologetics , church history and other branches of theology were published exclusively in the Orthodox Review. With particular care, the magazine introduced readers to the best works of foreign theological literature. The chronicle of church life in the West was conducted in more detail only in the second period of the magazine's existence.
In addition to religious figures (such as, for example, Archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church D. A. Tikhomirov [1] ), many secular persons took part in the journal; partly published in it are the works of A. S. Khomyakov (whom the magazine was an ardent supporter), I. V. Kireevsky , F. I. Tyutchev , Yu. F. Samarin , F. G. Turner , I. S. Aksakov , V. S. Soloviev and others.
The addenda to the magazine are remarkable: translation of the books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament by archimandrite Makarii Glukharyov ; “Monuments of ancient Christian writing in the Russian translation” (fully published “The Writings of the Apostolic Men”, “Works of Christian Apologists” and “Creations of St. Irenaeus of Lyons ”; the printing of “ Apocryphal Tales”, which was to make up the beginning of the publication, was interrupted by censorship conditions). There were two indexes to the journal: for 1860–70 ( P. A. Efremova , M., 1872) and for 1871–86 (V.V. Shakhova. M., 1887). See “The 25th Anniversary of the Editors of P. Review” (1882, No. 2).
