Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is a non-profit research project promoting the idea of openness of scientific publications, within the framework of which open software products were created, such as Open Journal Systems and [3] .

Content
History
The Public Knowledge Project was founded in 1998 by Dr. at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada , based on its own research in education and publishing [3] . Willinski is one of the main promoters of open access publications - he has written many scientific papers on the importance of academic research and its publication [4] .
PKP has developed a free, open source software product for managing, publishing and cataloging Open Journal Systems , [5] and Open Monograph Press [6] [7] .
Since 2005, important updates have been released for three software products (OJS, OCS, Harvester) [7] . By October 2014, OJS was deployed at least 24 thousand times around the world [8] . Open Journal Systems is used for publishing articles, testing, research, experiments, organizing a document repository , etc. [8] By the end of 2013, there were 7021 journals based on OJS, each of which had at least 10 articles [9] , more 5000 people registered on the forum [7] . In 2013, a new product called Open Monograph Press (a system for managing monographic publications) appeared [7] .
The community is constantly growing: this has already allowed the translation of OJS into Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese [10] .

Notes on the presentations were published on the blogs of conferences 2007 [16] and 2009 [17] . Since 2007, selected papers from conferences have been published in a special section of the online journal First Monday [18] . The papers presented at the 2009 conference are available in the introductory section of the journal Scholarly and Research Communication [19] .
Software
The main PKP software products are Open Journal Systems , Open Conference Systems , and Open Monograph Press . OJS is used to publish research results [20] , OCS is used to organize conferences and publish their results [5] , Harvester is used to organize and index metadata of publications [21] . The functionality of the pre-existing fifth application Lemon8-XML was transferred to existing products [22] .
Each product has open source code .
Applications have similar requirements: PHP interpreter, MySQL database , Apache or Microsoft IIS web server, Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X or Windows operating system [23] [24] [25] . To deploy applications requires a minimum of technical training [26] . All software products of the project have free support on the PKP forum; the project’s website is constantly increasing the number of publications and documentation on the topic of this software [27] .
Contributing Organizations
Public Knowledge Project collaborates with a large number of partners interested in accessible research, such as the (INASP) for the development of educational and research portals in Africa [28] , Bangladesh [29] , Nepal [30] , and Vietnam [31] [27] .
In 2008, PKP joined the Synergies Canada initiative [32] with five other participants to apply its experience in integrating a decentralized national platform for social sciences and humanities in Canada [33] .
