Biography

Vitaly Manin was born in 1929 [1] . He lived in Moscow. After graduation, he entered the State Central Institute of Physical Culture (GTSOLIFK named after I.V. Stalin ). After graduating, he decided to get a second higher education and entered the history department of Moscow State University , after which in 1957 he received a diploma of a historian and then an art historian [2] .

In the same 1957, for communication with the members of Lev Krasnopevtsev’s circle (who were involved in the “case of young historians”) [3] [4] Manin was expelled from the CPSU membership, as a result of which he practically lost the opportunity to get a job in the humanitarian specialty and was forced for several years to work as a school teacher of physical education [2] .

Nevertheless, Manin managed to continue his studies in art history, and in 1973 he defended his thesis on the subject “From the History of Art Associations of Moscow and Leningrad (1921-1932)” at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University [5] . In the 1970s, he worked as deputy director of the State Tretyakov Gallery [6] , and in different years worked as director of the Abramtsevo and Tsaritsyno museums [7] .

In 1991, Vitaly Manin defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme “ A. I. Kuindzhi and his school (On the question of the place of Kuindzhi’s heritage in the Russian landscape of the XX century)” [8] .

Since the 1970s, Vitaly Manin has published more than forty books on Russian and Soviet art, as well as about a hundred articles [1] .

Died April 22, 2016 [7] . He was buried at Pyatnitsky cemetery [9] .
