Biography
Representative of the Swedish branch of the famous noble family of Brahe . The grandson of statesman Pera Brahe the Elder (1520-1590), nephew of King Gustav I and cousin of the three Swedish kings Eric XIV , Johan III and Charles IX .
He was educated at the universities of Uppsala , Hesse , Bonn , Strasbourg and Padua , traveled a lot and was in the public service, since 1626 - chamberlain Gustav II Adolf and assistant to the chancellor A. Oksensherna .
With the rank of colonel of the cavalry regiment, he distinguished himself in battles with Prussia during the war with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1626-1629), in 1630 - in Germany.
In 1629 he was elected president of the Riksdag , and the following year he became secret adviser to the king.
After the death of Gustav II Adolf in 1632, he changed his military service to political.
Together with A. Oksensherna to solve diplomatic issues following the Thirty Years War in 1633 he was sent to Germany. As a result of negotiations, the entirety of the military and political power in Protestant Germany passed to the elected council, headed by the Swedish Chancellor Oksenshernoy [2] .
In 1635, Brahe concluded the Stumsdorf truce with Poland.
In 1632–1644, together with Axel Oksenshernoy, he acted as regent under the minor Kristina , the future Queen of Sweden.
In 1637–1640 and 1648–1654 he was the Swedish Governor-General of Finland, to whose development he made a significant contribution. He reformed the entire administrative system of the country, created a postal system, founded ten new cities, including in 1649 he founded the city of Bragestad (after Finland gained independence - Raahe ), took measures to improve and develop trade and agriculture, took care of church improvement, about school and mining, in many respects contributed to the development of education.
In 1640 he founded the first university in Finland - the Royal Academy in Abo (now the Abo Academy in Turku ), where he became the first chancellor. An inscription is carved on his monument in Turku : "I was pleased with the earth - and the earth was mine . "
After the death of Karl X Gustav in 1660, as a lord steward, he became one of the regents of Sweden for the second time. In the Council of State of Sweden, Per Brahe the Younger took the first place and was one of the guardians of Charles XI , taking full control of the external relations and internal affairs of the kingdom.
He died on September 2, 1680 in his castle Bugesund in Uppland (now in the municipality of Baxholm Lena Stockholm).
