Jacques Alexander Poiteuven (October 6, 1742, Montpellier [1] - April 1, 1807, ibid. [2] ) - French physicist , practical astronomer , physician and meteorologist .

Born in a Protestant family from Blois, sheltered from persecution in Languedoc in 1572 [3] ; his father was an adviser in the accounting chamber of the city. Initially, he studied law, later switched to the study of exact sciences, mainly astronomy, physics, medicine and agriculture; student of Ratt and Danisi. His collection of physical and astronomical instruments gave him the opportunity for 40 years of continuous work to make many important astronomical and meteorological observations for his time at the Montpellier Observatory and in his own country house in Mesoul. He was also engaged in the study of agricultural economics. In 1766, the Royal Society of Sciences in Montpellier elected him as its member [4] .
Major works: Essai sur le climat de Montpelier (1803); “Notice sur la vie et les ouvrages de Draparnaud” (1805). He also wrote many scientific articles and reports on his observations for the Royal Society.
