He was going to become a priest, but later at the University of Gottingen he began to study astronomy. Participated in the First Russian round-the-world expedition on the ship "Hope" in 1803-1806, performed astronomical, cartographic and hydrometeorological works. Then for two years he was engaged in the processing of observations. The works “On the oscillation of the barometer between the tropics”, “The degree of warmth of sea water at different depths” and “Specific gravity of sea water” are included in the third volume of the swimming report published by I.F. Kruzenshtern .

In 1805, together with G.I. Langsdorf, he visited Japan with a scientific purpose. There he first demonstrated to the Japanese the flight of a hot air balloon made from washi .

Adjunct in Astronomy (1806-1808) [2] and foreign corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 09.21.1808. He developed a method for the approximate solution of algebraic equations of high degrees, which he described in "Abhandlungen über die Curven zweiten Grades", 1820 and in "Fünf regelmäßigen Körper", 1831.
