Content

History

Since 2011 Belgazprombank has been implementing the Art-Belarus historical and cultural project, one of the tasks of which is the return of cultural property located abroad. In September 2012 - January 2013, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus hosted the exhibition " Artists of the Paris School of Belarus " [2] - the first exhibition project organized by Belgazprombank in collaboration with the National Artists of Belarus . The exhibition "Ten Centuries of Belarusian Art" was a logical continuation of this cooperation.

Concept

Art Belarus

The concept of the exhibition "Ten centuries of Belarusian art" coincides with the mission of the global project " Art Belarus ". Here is what Viktor Babariko, the ideological inspirer of the exhibition, says about this:

The Art Belarus project <...> has acquired the status of a national project that is designed to show the historical cross-section of the Belarusian fine art in its entirety and integrity <...> The exhibition “Ten Centuries of Belarusian Art <...> is the most vivid confirmation of this.

- Preface to the exhibition catalog [3]

Exposition Composition

The purpose of the exhibition “Ten Centuries of Belarusian Art” is to show the art of Belarus as a living and continuous process integrated into the global art space. For this purpose, almost 500 exhibits provided by 29 museums, libraries, private collectors, religious organizations of the republic were selected throughout Belarus (see # List of project participants ).

The exposition is based on works from the Belgazprombank corporate collection and funds of the NHM RB . For the first time at the exhibition “Ten Centuries of Belarusian Art”, the public demonstrated such artifacts of the banking collection as the book of Simeon Polotsky “The Rod of Government”, paintings by Valentin Vankovich “Portrait of Tomasz Zan ”, Chaim Soutine “Eve”, Marc Chagall “Clock in a Burning Sky” and "Green landscape." On the opening day of the exhibition, the museum exhibited a national relic - the Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk [4] .

The display of many works was preceded by significant restoration work [5] .

Art of Belarus

The phrase “art of Belarus” is used in the name of the exhibition, and not “Belarusian art” . This is done intentionally, as evidenced by the words of the author of the exhibition concept, Vladimir Schastny:

Given the fact that the authors of the works included in the project of the exhibition belonged to different ethnic and linguistic groups, it was decided to use the broader concept of “Belarusian art” instead of the definition “Belarusian art”. The artists represented at the exhibition were born on the lands that make up modern Belarus, or, having settled in our country, made an exceptional contribution to the development of Russian art.

- Preface to the exhibition catalog [6]

Organization of exposition and exhibition space

The exposition is located on two floors of the old building of the National Art Museum of Belarus . The exhibition space has undergone significant reconstruction. Designers from Russia, Lithuania and Belarus took part in its design [7] .

Active participants in the project were the journalists Oleg Lukashevich and Alexander Alekseev, who, as photographers, worked on the catalog of the exhibition [8] , and also made special films dedicated to architectural monuments of Belarus [9] - broadcast in the exhibition space (see # Links ).
