Biography
Early years
Klaus Johannis was born on June 13, 1959 and was the eldest child in the family of Transylvanian Saxons Susanna and Gustav Heinz Johannisov. Subsequently, in 1992, his parents moved to German Würzburg and received German citizenship, using the right to return .
Education and work
In 1979, Klaus Johannis entered the Faculty of Physics at the University of Babesh-Boyai in Cluj-Napoca , after passing the entrance exams, he was sent to Timisoara for 9 months to undergo military service [1] . After graduating from university in 1983, Johannis worked as a physics teacher at various schools and colleges in Sibiu , including from 1989 to 1997 at the Samuel von Bruckenthal Gymnasium, the oldest German-speaking school in Romania.
From 1997 to 1999, he was the deputy head school inspector of the Sibiu Happer , and from 1999 until his election as mayor in 2000, he was the head school inspector of the Hagiography [1] .
Political career
Back in 1990, Johannis joined the Democratic Forum of the Germans of Romania - the centrist party of the German minority. In 2001, he was elected president of this political formation.
In 2000, the Romanian Democratic Forum of Germans proposed Johannis as mayor of Sibiu. Despite the fact that the German minority made up 1.6% of the population in the city, Klaus unexpectedly won with a result of 69.18% of the vote, and then three times (in 2004, 2008 and 2012) he was re-elected mayor of Sibiu with one of the highest levels of support in country (88.7, 83.2% and 77.9% respectively) [2] .
During his tenure as mayor, Johannis restored the city’s infrastructure and reconstructed its historic center, turning Sibiu into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Romania. In 2007 (together with Luxembourg ) the city was chosen as the cultural capital of Europe ; in the same year, over 1 million tourists visited Sibiu. An indisputable achievement of Johannis is the restoration of the city's road network, the restoration of Sibiu International Airport , the creation of an industrial zone that has attracted major foreign investors to the city. In 2007, Romanian President Traian Basescu awarded Johannis the highest state award - the Order of the Star of Romania [3] .
On February 20, 2013, Klaus Johannis joined the National Liberal Party (NLP), announcing this during a press conference with Krin Antonescu . In the same year, at an extraordinary congress of NLP, he was elected the first vice-president of the party. At a meeting of June 28, 2014, Johannis was elected president of NLP with 95 percent of the vote [4] .
Presidential term
In the summer of 2014, the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Liberal Party formed the Christian Liberal Alliance , which proposed Klaus Johannis to serve as president of the country in the 2014 elections [5] . During the presidential campaign, Johannis emphasized the fight against corruption and improving the justice system. According to the results of the first round of voting, held on November 2, 2014, Johannis took second place, gaining 30.37% of the vote and entered the second round [6] . In the second round of voting on November 16, 2014, 54.53% of the voters who voted for the vote cast their votes for Johannis [7] .
The inauguration of Johannis took place on December 21, 2014 at a meeting of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies [8] . After taking office, Johannis suspended his membership in the National Liberal Party - the Romanian constitution does not allow the president to be a member of a political party.
The first year of Johannis’s presidency was marked by heated polemics with Prime Minister Viktor Ponta . In connection with a criminal investigation into the corruption of Ponta, the president called on the latter to resign. As a result, the government of Ponta resigned, but this happened after the mass protests caused by a fire in a nightclub in Bucharest .
In 2015, as President of Romania, Johannis paid visits to France , Moldova , Germany , Poland , Italy , Latvia , Croatia , Spain and the USA . In 2016, Johannis traveled to Israel [9] .
