Early life and education
Anis Basvedan was born on May 7, 1969 in the West Javanese city of . He graduated from the with a doctorate in political science ; In addition, he holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy in International Security and Economic Policy , and a degree in Business Administration from Gaja Mada University in Yogyakarta . During his studies, he won a Fulbright (2004) scholarship, a Gerard Maryanov scholarship from the University of Northern Illinois, a Indonesia Cultural Fund scholarship to New York , a Japan Airlines scholarship and a William P. Cole III scholarship from the University of Maryland. He also became one of the 50 best graduates of the University of Northern Illinois.
Career
Anis Basvedan became known in Indonesia primarily as a scientist and teacher. In 2007, he was elected President of the . In 2009, he founded the education program ( indonesia. Indonesia Mengajar ).
Along with his scientific and educational career, Anis Basvedan is actively involved in politics. In June 2009, in anticipation of the presidential election , he moderated Indonesia’s first television debate between presidential candidates. In 2011, President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono appointed Basvedan as a member of the selection team for the leadership of the National Electoral Commission. He was also known for his case of the arrest by the Indonesian police of two commissioners , which caused great resonance in society, in particular in social networks ; during a series of press conferences, he managed to reduce tensions and quench public discontent with police actions. Basvedan positions himself as an independent politician, not affiliated with any parties or groups; in 2010, he was at the forefront of social movement, but refused to join its ranks.
On October 27, 2014, President Joko Vidodo appointed Basvedan as Minister of Culture, Primary and Secondary Education in his office . He remained at the post of minister until 2016.
In 2017, he participated in the . In the first round, he took second place, ahead of Agus Harimurti Yudoyono (son of Susilo Bambang Yudoyono), but lost to the current governor of Basuki Chahai Purnama . In the second round, he defeated Basuki Chahai Purnama.

Anis Basvedan has been awarded several prestigious scientific and educational prizes and awards, including the Yasuhiro Nakasone Award (2010) and Indonesian Award Bina Antar Budaya. In 2008, Foreign Policy magazine included him among the 100 most influential intellectuals in the world [1] . In 2009, he joined the . In April 2010, the Japanese magazine Foresight published a special report entitled “20 Persons in 20 Years” ( Eng. 20 Persons 20 Years ), in which the names of 20 influential people from around the world, whom the magazine intended to observe over the next 20 years, were named ; the name of Basvedan [2] also fell on this list. In July 2010, the head of the Royal Islamic Center for Strategic Studies of Jordan included him among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world.

Anis Basvedan is married to Feri Fatnati Ganis ( indon. Fery Farhati Ganis ), their family has two children - Mikail Azizi ( indon. Mikail Azizi ) and Ismail Hakim ( indon. Ismail Hakim ). Anisa's grandfather, , an active participant in the struggle for the independence of Indonesia, the Minister of Information of Indonesia in the 1940s.
