History

Necrosis (1988-1992)

Cryptopsy was formed in 1988 by drummer Mike Atkin, guitarist Steve Thibault and vocalist Dan Greening, nicknamed “Lord Worm” [1] . It was originally known as Necrosis. John Todd joined the band as a bass player . In 1989, the group released its first demo - Mastication and Heterodontism , in 1991 the second demo - Realms Of Pathogenia and the third in 1992 - Necrosis . In 1992 , the group was renamed Cryptopsy. Guitarist Mike Atkin, being a professional drummer who played in the genres of thrash / speed metal , left the band. In his place came Flo Mounier, and his fast, heavy and rhythmic style of play created the sound of the group. Guitarist John Todd quit the band to focus on his family. His place was taken by Dave Galey.

Blasphemy Made Flesh (1993-1995)

Cryptopsy hired bass player Kevin Wigle and in 1993 released the debut demo album Ungentle Exhumation . This demo allowed the band to sign with Gore Records . In a short period of time, the label reissued the demo. Ungentle Exhumation is interested in the underground German death metal label Invasion Records .

In 1994, bassist Kevin Wigle was replaced by Martin Ferguson. And guitarist Dave Galia was replaced by John Levasser. The updated composition recorded their debut studio album - Blasphemy Made Flesh , which contained anti-Christian ideology. The album was released by Invasion Records. The album gained popularity in the Canadian underground.

Despite the popularity of the group, there were problems with the label. Invasion collapsed as a result of a lack of finance, and as a result, Cryptopsy without a label could not support their tour and promotion of the album. Despite the failure, the album came into possession of Displeased Records . After a successful tour in support of the album, guitarist Steve Thibault left the band, although he remained the band's manager for five months. Bassist Martin Ferguson was replaced by Eric Langlois. Langlois added funk elements to the band in the field of bass.

None So Vile (1996-1997)

In 1996 , Cryptopsy in an updated composition recorded the album None So Vile , which was a mixture of brutal death and techno death . The album was released on the Swedish label Wrong Again Records . The author of all the texts was John Levasser. After a tour in support of the None So Vile, Lord Worm left the group to begin teaching English classes at school. Musical disagreements appeared in the group, the members of the group wanted to change the genre, and Worm did not want the group to experiment.

In early 1997, a new vocalist, Mike DiSalvo, joined the group. He was from Boston and agreed to become a new member of the group. DiSalvo had a different vocal style than Worm: more extreme and hardcore . In July 1997, the group performs at the Milwaukee Metalfest XI metal festival, where the group attracted the attention of many metallers, including the major label Century Media .

... And Then You'll Beg (2000-2001)

Cryptopsy released their fourth album ... And Then You'll Beg , in 2000. The album was recorded with a new guitarist, Alex Oborn, who replaced Miguel Roy. And Then You'll Beg was tougher and heavier than previous albums. The album combined progressive elements, technicality and experimentalism. After the tour in support of the album, Mike DiSalvo leaves the group for the sake of family life.

In 2001, Martin LaCroix, a fan of the band, was taken as the band's in-session vocalist for a tour of Europe and Japan . His singing style was something between Lord Worm and Mike DiSalvo.

None So Live (2002-2004)

In June 2001, the group played their first concert in their own city of Montreal . For 4 years they have sold more than 2000 records. The concert was recorded and released as a None So Live live album in May 2003. LaCroix wrote all the texts, and since he did not speak English, the group had to speak French with him, so the group had problems with the lyrics.

In the same year, Lord Worm returned to the group. And the very next year she played a tour in Canada , already with a replenishment in the composition: the guitarist and founder of the group Miguel Roy returned to the group, who replaced John Levasser. In October, Dan Mongrain was taken as the second concert guitarist. At concerts, he performed songs from the albums None So Vile , Blasphemy Made Flesh , Whisper Supremacy . The Canadian tour was completed in early November, at the Metalfest IV Festival. In 2005, the live DVD Live at Trois-Rivieres Metalfest IV was released.

Once Was Not (2005-2006)

On January 31, 2005, John Levasser announced that he had lost interest in extreme music and left the band. Dan Mongrain stayed to play Back to the Worms on tour from February to May. After the tour, Mongrain left the band and organized the techno-death band Martyr (band) . Then it was announced that the group will release their new album Once Was Not on October 17, 2005. On September 28, it was announced that Christian Donaldson of the Mythosis band would be the concert guitarist. The group went on a North American tour with the groups Suffocation , Despised Icon and Aborted . Copies of Once Was Not were allowed for sale at concerts. After a short break, drummer Flo Mounier released Extreme Metal Drumming 101 , and the band went on a European tour with Grave , Aborted , Dew-Scented and others. After tours to Australia and America, it was announced that Christian Donaldson became a permanent member of the group.

The Unspoken King (2007—2011)

In 2008, the group released a new album - The Unspoken King , which was originally supposed to be called The Book of Suffering [2] , but on April 23, 2007 it became known that vocalist Lord Worm was fired from the group and the group began searching for a new vocalist. Worm himself said that he left the group for health reasons, and the participants did not like it.

On December 4, 2007, the band announced a new vocalist, Matt McGhee, as well as keyboardist Maggie Durant. With the new vocalist, the group decided to change the style to a deathcore with melodic elements, occasionally diluted with clean vocals. The album itself was released on June 24, 2008. [3] . The album also had elements of metalcore . [four]

In February 2009, guitarist Alex Oborn announced his withdrawal from the group, saying that he was forced to do this for a variety of reasons, and the group agreed.

Cryptopsy (2011-present)

On May 25, 2011, a record appeared on the band’s official Facebook page that guitarist John Levasser would return to the band. In addition, bassist Eric Langlois decided to “take a break” from Cryptopsy, and Yuri Raymond will take his place. Raymond left the group on December 9, 2011 [5] . On January 15, 2012, bassist Olivier Pinard, from the Neuraxis band, joined the band [6]

September 14, 2012 the group released the self-titled album Cryptopsy . The album combined technical death metal and deathcore .
