William Makleroy ( born William McLeroy , nickname "Bad" from the English Bud [2] ; born in 1960 [3] ) is an American marine who was known to be the first one-legged amputee to participate in the Iraq War [ 1] and served in the fire department [4] [5] .

Biography
Young years
The broker grew up in in San Diego and attended , but in high school he switched to evening classes to save money to fund his upcoming Mormon missionary work. [3] After leaving school, Makleroi was a missionary for two years, and then enlisted in the Marine Corps [3] .
Military Service
After six years of service in the Marine Corps of Engineers, in 1987, Mackleroy joined the [6] , before enlisting in active military service [3] . After that, the broker was in West Berlin , where he witnessed the fall of the Wall [3] . In 1990, Broker returned to the reserve. Having lost his leg in 1993, Makleroi became the first amputee soldier without a leg [4] . During the Iraq war , in Baghdad , after shelling two peaceful Iraqis, Makleroi helped drag them through the barbed wire under fire [7] , injuring his abdomen and back [8] , after which he had to undergo surgery on his spinal cord [6] . For his actions, Makleroi was recommended for submission to the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medal [8] , but received only the latest award [2] . In 2012, Makleroy worked as a commandant of the 80th training command [4] . In 2014, he retired for medical reasons after nearly 33 years of service [2] . The ceremony was held at the USS Midway Museum Ship Museum (CV-41) in San Diego [9] .
Civilian career
In 1990, Macleroy began working as a firefighter in San Diego [4] , enrolling in the [3] . On September 26, 1993, during the pre-race stage in for the , Brokers got out of his car to try to start a stopped engine, but was covered with dust from passing cars [10] , resulting in why he was hit by another racing car, tearing his leg below the knee [3] [11] . The broker was promptly taken to the hospital within 45 minutes, which saved his life, and spent three days in intensive care, after which he decided to amputate [10] . Two months later, he returned to work [8] , and in January 1994 he received his first prosthesis [3] . Thus, he became the first one-legged professional firefighter in the USA [3] [4] .
Political Ambition
In 2009, Brokers announced their intention to for the House of Representatives from the against current MP [12] . However, he did not appear in the primary vote in June 2010, and did not receive a seat on the Central Committee of the Republican Party from San Diego County [13] . In 2010, Makleroi nominated himself as a member of the board of and took third place (out of four) for the fifth seat [14] . In 2012, Makleroi again ran for the position of member of the board, but received 41.82% of the vote [15] . In 2014, Mackleroy ran for [16] , taking second place among four candidates [17] .
